The Super Bowl matchup this year feels familiar almost too familiar. The New England Patriots vs the Seattle Seahawks. Just hearing those two teams together brings back memories of one of the most talked about moments in NFL history.
The last time these two met on the biggest stage it was Tom Brady vs Russell Wilson in Super Bowl XLIX. The Patriots won 28 to 24 but that game is remembered for one play more than anything else. The Seahawks did not hand the ball off to Marshawn Lynch at the goal line. Instead a pass was thrown and Malcolm Butler intercepted it. Game over. Championship gone. A moment Seahawks fans still have not fully let go of.
Fast forward to now and the story is different but the weight of that history is still there.
Both teams earned their way here and have played high level football all season. The Patriots have been efficient on offense and disciplined on defense which is exactly what you expect from New England. They do not usually beat themselves and they are comfortable playing close gritty games. Stat wise they have leaned on consistent quarterback play and timely scoring especially late in games.
The Seahawks feel more balanced and more explosive. They have shown they can win through the air on the ground and defensively. Their offense has put up strong numbers all season and they have been one of the more physical teams in the league. What stands out most to me is how they handle pressure. They do not panic and they do not shy away from big moments.
That is why my prediction is the Seahawks.
Not because the Patriots are not good because they absolutely are. And not because this game will be easy because it will not be. This feels like a four quarter game where every possession matters and one mistake can change everything. But I think Seattle has learned from the past. They have been here before. They know what is at stake. I do not see them making the same mistake twice.
If this game comes down to a final drive or a goal line situation I trust the Seahawks to finish it the right way this time.
Seahawks win but it will be tough all the way through.
