If you are a West Georgia football fan, Saturday night was exactly what we needed.
After four straight losses to begin the 2026 season, West Georgia finally broke through with a dominant 49-7 win over Fort Valley State at University Stadium.
More importantly, the Wolves finally gave us a reason to believe this season can still become something.
It has not been an easy start. West Georgia entered Saturday night 0-4, and the program has dealt with more than just losses on the field. First year head coach Steve Englehart was suspended by the university earlier this season during an NCAA recruiting compliance review.
With a new coaching staff, four losses and everything happening around the program, it would have been easy for this team to lose confidence.
Instead, the Wolves came out swinging.
West Georgia scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters and built a 42-0 lead before the fourth. The offense moved the ball, the defense kept Fort Valley State from finding any rhythm and, for the first time this season, everything seemed to click.
Quarterback Colton Fitzgerald led the way with 384 passing yards and four touchdowns. The Wolves finished with 543 total yards while holding Fort Valley State to only 174.
But this win felt bigger than the numbers.
As students, we have watched this team take some tough losses this season. We have seen the scoreboard get ugly. We have watched the Wolves get close against ETSU only to come up short again.
That is why Saturday felt different.
Sometimes all it takes is one win to remind a team what it is capable of doing.
West Georgia is still 1-4. There is still plenty to improve, and the toughest part of the season is not going to disappear because of one Saturday night.
But 1-4 feels a lot different than 0-5.
Now the Wolves have something to build on.
They know what it feels like to put together four quarters. They know what this offense can look like when it gets going. Most importantly, they finally know what it feels like to walk off the field as winners this season.
Maybe Saturday was just one win.
Or maybe it was the beginning of something.
Either way, there is still football left to play in Carrollton, and there is still time to turn this season around.
The first win is finally out of the way.
Let’s build from here.
