West Georgia football set for crucial road game at Arkansas State

The West Georgia Wolves football season is under way, and it is hard to imagine a scenario that could be worse than what Wolves fans are currently experiencing. The team is 0-2, there has been no update on the investigation into the Wolves head coach Steve Englehart, and the team is coming off of a 47-0 loss to the Kennesaw State Owls last week. All of these headlines point towards Saturday’s matchup against the Arkansas State Red Wolves being a massive matchup for how West Georgia’s season will go.

Potential turning point for the Wolves

After an 0-2 start for the West Georgia Wolves, the Wolves head into this contest with a chance to change the narrative of the season. A win would be massive for the Wolves, but with Arkansas State having a 91.4 percent chance to win the contest today according to ESPN’s matchup predictor. That puts the Wolves in a situation where they just need to compete to walk away with their heads held high. A day that is filled with doing the little things right can prove to be an important thing for the Wolves as they get their season back on track.

Establish a ground game

The Wolves have struggled on the ground this season, combining for 128 yards in their first two contests this season. The Wolves have ran the ball 44 times this season at a pace of 2.0 yards per carry. Having a reliable rushing attack will change the tone of games monumentally, as it opens up the offensive play calls and allows the offensive to get creative. If the Wolves can establish a ground game today, it will be a stepping stone for the rest of the season.

Quarterback play for the Wolves

All three quarterback on the Wolves roster saw action last weekend. Collin Hurst, the opening week starter, completed nine of his 15 passes for 93 yards. Luke Marble completed one of three pass attempts for three yards, but led the Wolves in rushing yards in the game with 23. Colton Fitzgerald completed five of 18 passes for 15 yards. Hurst still seems to be the leader of the offense heading into the game against the Red Wolves. The contest could prove to be a big opportunity for Hurst to cement himself as the leader of the team.
