UWG Women’s Basketball beats Florida A&M; Gets first Division I win in school history

The West Georgia Wolves defeated the Florida A&M Rattlers 65-54 in their first year of division 1 basketball. UWG joined by Florida A&M both entered the game winless, with West Georgia at 0-3 and Florida A&M at 0-4.

The Wolves started the game strong, leading the Rattlers 12-2 toward the end of the first quarter. Though West Georgia led most of the game, by as much as twelve points, Florida A&M frequently cut into the lead. They reduced the margin to four points in the second quarter and trailed by five at halftime.

Florida A&M executed the pick-and-roll effectively and slowed the game down in the first half, which helped them chip away at the lead.

Both teams played solid defense in the third and fourth quarters, but West Georgia had multiple answers. Forward K’Nari Holiday and Guard Zuriyah Davis provided key contributions that pushed the Wolves over the top. Holiday finished with nine points and six rebounds, while Davis led the Wolves in scoring with 15 points, including two three-pointers.

Becca Ledford added 13 points for West Georgia, including three made three-pointers.

Destiny Jones contributed six points and six rebounds, but her impact went beyond the stat sheet. She played with intensity, helping to keep the Rattlers at bay in the first half. Jones made her presence felt on both sides of the ball.

Although the Rattlers came up short, Sabou Gueye led all scorers with 18 points and played aggressively throughout. Sydney Hendrix also had a strong performance, recording 13 points and eight rebounds.

Cheyenne McEvans added to Florida A&M’s efforts, contributing nine points and seven rebounds.

This victory marks the first-ever Division I basketball win in West Georgia’s school history. The Wolves are now 1-3 and will take on the Talladega Tornadoes on November 26 at 5:30 PM in the Coliseum.
