While the exact length is yet to be determined, WSN sources close to the team have stated that Englehart could be facing up to a six-game suspension for the NCAA compliance violation.
The stage for the West Georgia Wolves home opener was set to be huge, as it was the beginning of a new era under newly named head coach Steve Englehart. Then, 90 minutes before kickoff, the University of West Georgia athletic department put out a statement that stated Englehart would not be able to be on the sidelines for the game due to a self-imposed corrective measure on an ongoing investigation by the NCAA and UAC football conference.
This means that the start of the new Englehart era could be even longer than fans anticipate. If he does serve a full six game suspension, the team could be without their head coach on the sideline until the Wolves host Austin Peay on October 17.
Wolves fans could get to see more of associate head coach/offensive coordinator Jayson Martin taking on the head coaching duties. Martin stepped in for Englehart for the team’s season opening 24-10 loss against the UT Chattanooga Mocs.
The Wolves are back in action this Thursday, as they travel to Kennesaw to take on the Kennesaw State Owls. Kickoff for that game is set to be at 7 p.m.
